INTELLECTUAL ACTION TO ADVANCE THE EVOLUTIONARY PROJECT

NewMathforHumanity takes as one of its key concepts the "Creative Power Frontier". We are engaged in a learning process, in the creation of new concepts, models, services and products relating to the constructive use of power and the transformation of power from destructive and oppressive forms to life-enhancing processes and forms.

We are by nature an R & D initiative. We are trying deliberately to avoid re-cycling old ideas. We are pushing toward our own Creative Power Frontier, and we are prepared to take the associated risks. But we believe that our contribution, to be credible, must include sober reflection and high quality research on key topics related to our interest in power.

Our R&D work includes:

The Peace Guerilla Handbook

This Handbook is for anyone charged with the task of preventing political violence or with building peace. The Handbook puts flesh on the bones of commonly recited “best practices” for peacebuilding: that action be theory informed, holistic, comprehensive, collaborative, facilitative and sustained. It goes further, calling upon the peacebuilder to apply unconventional methodologies in an ever-vigilant effort to remove violence and to build the conditions in society that will make positive peace sustainable.

Cost: $10.00 [CAD or USD] + $2 Shipping and Handling ($3.50 for U.S. customers and $4.50 for international orders - shipping costs on orders of two more books are invoiced on a per cost basis).

Eliminating Organized Violence: A Literature Review

This literature review is the first step in a study of "what works" to reduce the incidence and severity of organized violence. The review is structured around twelve key questions, ranging from the definition and causes of organized violence to whether it might be eliminated entirely.

The review finds that there is strong agreement that conflict and violence are not one and the same. Organized violence is both the violent causes and responses to political conflict, and it has two forms: structural and direct.

How To Reduce Organized Violence: What Works, What Is Not Effective, and What is Needed

This discussion paper is based on a summary of the findings of a broad-ranging review of the literature on how to reduce the incidence and severity of organized violence. The objective of the study is to contribute to a more promising alignment of effort in the peace and conflict resolution field by identifying "what works", what is not effective, and what is needed. It seeks practical, effective means to make the world a more peaceful, less violent place in which to live.

Mapping Political Violence Ecologically
By Evan Hoffman

NewMathforHumanity has developed a new tool for the analysis of political violence based on the deep ecology perspective of nature.

Our recent research into "what works" to reduce political violence has revealed that the current models of conflict analysis are limited and application often lacks rigor. Both the popular lifecycle and medical models do not adequately describe the true complexity and interconnectedness of political violence; they do not sufficiently account for power and political dynamics; and they often do not lead to decisive action to reduce and eliminate political violence.

This more organic "ecological model" overcomes these weaknesses.

This research applies the deep ecology perspective to conflict analysis to result in a new way of mapping conflicts and viewing political violence. In this model, political violence is viewed as a toxin that disrupts the human relations ecosystem. A solid goal to work towards is derived: health and balance.

As well, intervention design and practical ways to apply this model are covered.

PERSONAL POWER SELF-ASSESSMENT

We are crafting a unique assessment instrument that takes the following key elements into account:

1. Our definition of power:

POWER = Resources (R) mobilized (x) by the use of Skills (S) as a function (f) of a Decision (D) which overcomes (/) Resistance (r) to produce (-->) an Outcome (O)

That is: P = R x S f D/r -->O

2. Boulding's notion of the Possibility Boundary: *

We have adapted both the concept of Pareto optimality and Boulding's notion of the Possibility Boundary to our own concept of the Power Axis to measure what we call "real power units" in our assessment of personal power.
