BEN
HOFFMAN DELIVERS
A "NEGOTIATION & MEDIATION CLINIC" TO THE PARTICIPANTS OF THE
6TH NEW ISSUES IN SECURITY COURSE (NISC) AT THE GENEVA CENTRE FOR SECURITY POLICY
(GCSP)
-May, 2005-
On May 6th. Ben Hoffman delivered a one day negotiation and mediation "clinic"
in Geneva to the participants of the NISC course.
The NISC course aims to prepare participants for enhanced policy planning, decision-making,
and practical implementation in a range of complex and interlinked peace and
security situations.
This course is for senior and mid-career professionals from around the world
and participating in this 12 week program is by invitation only.
The participants were exposed to a lively skills-based clinic where they had
a chance to refine their negotiation and mediation skills through several exercises
and role plays.
As such, the role plays were designed to challenge the participants to deal
with the tough realties that they face on the ground and to test theory against
the complex scenarios that often occur in peacebuilding.
They began the day with some work on micro-skills as well as an overview of
the larger process of mediating, then they worked on the skills exercises.
The day culminated in a multi-party, multi-issue role play simulating mediation
between key stakeholders trying to resolve a conflict about managing a Refugee
Camp in a fictional war-torn country.
The participants responded very well
to the exercises and found it to be a rewarding and enlightening day where they
gained many new insights.
